New Guidance on Mains Socket Covers

On the 30th June 2016 the NHS released a new health and safety requirement instructing all its health and social properties to remove all of the 13A plastic socket inserts in use from electrical sockets and responsibly dispose of them by the end of 2016. They also stated that they should not be supplied for use in a home. This also applies to all childcare registered organisations.

After contacting Citation PLC, our health and safety advisors, they confirmed that we should remove all plug socket covers.

The latest information states that the British 13 Amp plug and socket conforming to the BS 1363 standard is considered to be the safest in the world.

The requirement of ‘The Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994’ states that sockets must be safe and include internal shutters to prevent children from poking objects into them.

The latest legislation states that socket inserts on the market do not meet any electrical standard and can damage the safety design of the socket.

All of the plug sockets throughout the nursery were checked by qualified electricians who work for Albion Power in Burton-on-Trent. They confirmed that all of our plug sockets conform to the latest British Standards, all having internal shutters, with no modifications required.

Therefore, in line with the latest legislation, all plug socket covers have now been removed from the nursey sockets.
